Background of the Study
Gambling has evolved into a widely debated social phenomenon, with its potential links to criminal activities attracting significant attention. In Iwo Local Government Area, Osun State, the increasing prevalence of gambling establishments and informal betting activities has raised concerns about its association with criminal behavior. Research indicates that excessive gambling can lead to financial distress, which in turn may drive individuals to engage in criminal activities such as theft, fraud, and even violent crimes (Adetola, 2023). The lure of quick financial gains through gambling often masks the risks of addiction and subsequent socio-economic problems. Moreover, the social environment surrounding gambling—characterized by secrecy, peer influence, and a lack of regulatory oversight—may facilitate other illicit activities. Evidence suggests that problem gambling exacerbates family breakdowns and undermines community cohesion, further contributing to a climate where criminal activities can flourish (Balogun, 2024). This study seeks to examine the complex interplay between gambling and criminal activities by analyzing both individual behaviors and community-wide trends. Through qualitative interviews, statistical analyses, and case studies, the research aims to provide a holistic understanding of how gambling influences criminal conduct and what measures can be implemented to curb its adverse effects (Olanrewaju, 2025).
Statement of the Problem
Despite the recognized link between gambling and criminal behavior, there is insufficient research focused on Iwo Local Government Area, Osun State (Babatunde, 2023). The rise in gambling activities appears to correlate with an increase in criminal incidents, yet local law enforcement and policymakers lack comprehensive data to support effective interventions. Financial hardships induced by compulsive gambling may compel individuals to commit crimes to sustain their habit, while the informal nature of many betting operations hampers regulatory oversight. This gap in research limits the ability to understand the full extent of the problem and devise targeted solutions. Addressing this issue is imperative to safeguard community welfare and reduce crime rates linked to gambling (Oluwaseun, 2024).
Objectives of the Study:
To assess the prevalence of gambling activities in Iwo.
To determine the relationship between gambling and various criminal activities.
To suggest policy interventions for regulating gambling and reducing associated crimes.
Research Questions:
What is the extent of gambling activities in Iwo Local Government Area?
How does gambling contribute to criminal behavior in the community?
What regulatory measures can mitigate the negative impact of gambling on crime?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: There is a significant relationship between gambling activities and increased criminal behavior in Iwo.
H2: Financial strain from gambling contributes to higher rates of theft and fraud.
H3: Effective regulatory frameworks reduce the incidence of gambling-related crimes.
